Safety Training

Safety is a culture it is not something we do and forget about it, in fact it is a qualification that only works with continuing education. Therefore I would like to see more of our contractors make use of the safety programs we have in place.

There has been a surge of requests from members and non-members about our Safety programs. Bill Poss of Signature Safety has been assigned the task to follow up the email requests we have been getting for various safety classes. We are keeping a register of all personnel who have gone through the RCAW sponsored Safety programs, and we will issue the appropriate certificates to the person who has been trained. Remember that this is really good for your industry and your company.

Please visit our web page safety to see what we provide and if the program you want is not there please contact our office at the following email address execdir@rcaw.com or leave a comment on the web site.

Roofing Industry Industrial Insurance Claims Information

Attached is some very interesting state industrial insurance claims information about the roofing industry.  Some of the key points are:

  • Over the 5-year period, 2005 – 2010, the roofing industry had 4694 claims –  900+ per year and this is way down according to L&I because of the slower economy
  • Those claims have already cost the industry $70 million and many are not yet finalized and closed
  • These claims are expected to cost the industry $94+ million once they are all closed.
  • The 45+  most common claims and their average claims costs are below:

Check out this spread sheet.2006-2010-DataToShare It is really important to examine this table as it covers many sub divisons of the roofing category.

The above information underscores the need for a good and contineous safety programs in very one of the RCAW member companies. We will be writing to all of the members highlighting all of the safety programs we provide as an association, which we hope the members will take part in and support.

Permanent fall arrest/restraint anchorage devices.

Gary Smith of IBA, Don Vose and Myself represented the membership of the RCAW to have this fall restraint issue put to bed. It has been resurrected for the hearing of last year. And reintroduced yesterday April 13th 2012. I am pleased to report we were successful by making very strong representation that defeated the proposed code change. This does not mean that if your company wants to offer these anchorages as an additional service to your client that you can’t or should not, but it is not mandated as stated in the proposal before the Council. What this  means to our roofing community is that you will still be expected to provide fall restraints when working on elevated roofs as required by the law, but leaving the anchorages behind will not be mandatory.
